Sage: Spice, Herbal Tea and Medicinal Plant: The first Choice for a Sore Throat

Sage has not only been famous as a spice for hundreds of years, but also as an herbal tea and a medicinal plant: “How can a person die when their garden is full of sage?”, as the medical saying from the 13th Century goes.

The name sage comes from the Latin “salvare” which means the same as, to cure. This is based on the medicinal properties of the sage oil which is found predominantly in its leaves. This essential oil prevents the growth of bacteria, viruses and fungi. The tanning agents contained in sage are anti-inflammatory.

Sage is a well-known gargling substance used for sore throats in the form of tea or as a diluted tincture and as sore throat lozenges. Sage also aids digestion and combats flatulence after eating fatty food. It helps, too, to prevent excessive sweating in stress situations or during the menopause.

It acts as an appetiser and, a blood cleanser and purifier. Added honey attenuates the slightly bitter taste. Sage can also be used externally: for pressure sores from dentures, gum ulcers and gum atrophy. This shows that sage has manifold uses whether as a healing tincture, aromatic spice, a tasty tea or soothing throat lozenges.

Sage is also nice to look at, especially the lavender blue to deep violet blue blossoms of summer sage which looks lovely in the garden or on the balcony.
